Slightly off topic, but it always makes me laugh how every single one of these AD home tour videos has a top liked comment saying something like “now THIS is a real, lived-in home! It’s so cozy and personal unlike all the other celebrity homes I’ve seen on this channel!”
I thought I was alone here, that always gets a snort out of me. Most of all when they're showing their London or NYC apartment, when that celebrity is clearly stationed in LA 99% of the time. 😭
Fr! As if the celeb probably didn’t have a team show up to make sure everything was perfect before the interview. “Normal” people will often spruce up their house/clean before guests are coming over, I can only imagine the pre-interview sprucing celebs do.
To me, it doesn't sound like she was trying to lie. Her tone sounds very sarcastic/ironic, specifically because she was surprised to see that big bowl of a fruit she is allergic to prominently displayed in her house while a camera crew was filming her.
Incidentally these celebrity homes are often listed on Zillow straight after their AD video airs. They only show their home once they are no longer using it. They are using the AD video as a free real estate advert that they also get paid for. Cashing in twice.
It probably allows you to channel genuine fury about injustices in your life or that you've witnessed that you feel powerless to tackle into something trivial and therefore manageable. Be careful with your annoyance, anger is your most precious resource when it comes to changing things you need to change. Dilute it too much and it becomes ineffective.
Mariah Carey’s episode of cribs lives rent free in my mind. Her massive closet, the bathtub scene, the way she changed outfits each time she entered a new room. Top tier glamour✨
Wiz Khalifa's is my favorite. Not necessarily architecturally, but just because he has his kid's toys everywhere and doesn't care about the place looking perfect at every angle. People never seem to think about children when they design a house, which I think is a shame because you can have so much fun with it. The house actually felt like people used it instead of a museum. Edit: design-wise I liked Kirsten Dunst, Aaron Paul, and Emma Chamberlain's homes
@@abbyz13 I'm sure parts of his house were still staged but at least it was in a realistic way that showcased the things he cared about as opposed to just unnecessary decoration.
agree! I feel so sad for those kids living in houses that look like museums/stores, where probably they can't play. So sad. When you have kids stuff gets messy AND IT'S OK. It's life, and the best part of it bc you love them...or you should love them. Kim's house seems like such an un-loving place.
Florence Welch did a house tour a few years ago and I don't know how to explain it but if you know her, the house looks exactly how you imagined it would be. it's lovely and full of personality
Note: communal apartments are not the same as general soviet apartments. A lot of people shared huge pre-revolution flats in bigger cities, but closer to the end of the soviet era many people moved into their own apartments as those were build everywhere at a huge scale. So for people living in ex-soviet countries staple soviet housing are "projects", not communal apartments. They were so standard at every dimension that there is a cult soviet comedy about a guy who travels drunk to the wrong city, but still finds the same house and the same apartment at the street with the same name and crashes there as it would be his own house.
Yes! Also - tenements existed in capitalist societies. Would have made sense to discuss changes in housing costs as well as home ownership, multiple family and single residencies in rural vs urban areas during the same period.
the amount of times i tried to open the wrong door (in the same building but still) is plain embarassing. especially when the people are at home and open it to ask wtf youre doing and youre just🧍♀
I met Simone de Beauvoir in her Parisian flat in 1985 for about 5 minutes to get an autograph in one of my twin sister’s and my favourite books. I tried to soak up as much as possible, it is one of my most precious memories in my 60 year old life.
Omg, what a story. I don't know if I would have had the guts. How was she? She always seemed so intimidating to me. I've loved her work ever since I first discovered it in first year university (that's 20 years ago lol).
@@IrsidaSheshi At first she seemed "not amused" seeing two strangers (my then boyfriend and me) in front of her door. I told her, that my twin sister and I love her books and that I wanted to ask, if she would write something in my sister's favorite book, which I had with me ("Les mandarins de Paris "). She smiled and asked us in. She went to get a pencil and wrote "A Claudia R. en toute sympathie, S.de Beauvoir") into the book. My sister couldn't be happier when I gave back the book to her. She, too, asked how I could have the guts. You do a lot for people you love, more than for yourself often. Thanks for your kind message! Alexandra (my real name)
@@lissymercury9066 My goodness, what a beautiful story. Thank you so much for sharing it, Alexandra. Beautiful name. Believe it or not, it's one of the names I have chosen for my future daughters (if God is kind enough to gift them to me). I love Les Mandarins de Paris, one of my favorites. What a noble gesture to do for your sister and a noble one to share it here with me too, thank you so much. I feel so touched, for some reason. Like I was there with you. You should write. You have a way of making people feel with your words. I send you love. Irsida from Canada
Those AD videos always make me super uncomfortable, I still watch them because architecture, but they just seem so curated and uncanny valley vibes. Like its pretending to be a home but feels off.
to me, that makes it a bit less uncomfortable :) i get weirded out by the thought of random strangers _actually_ knowing how someone lives, and the fact that AD tours are so curated and fake gives me a distance that makes it better.
I love the random stories they feel they need to tell about a light fixture they fell in love with or a picture on the wall, I genuinely can’t tell if they just make it all up to mess with people 😂
Mina's correct that real property ownership info is available to the public via county records, but most celebrities will put their homes / properties in trusts or pseudonyms to avoid fans and gawkers. Helps them acchieve a little privacy!
P.S. On the "bedwomb", it's generally not legal to have a bedroom with only 1 exit - very dangerous, many people have died because of bedrooms lacking an emergency escape route.
Always found it funny how ultra rich celebrities describe luxurious attributes of their homes as linked to their own personal taste. "I really LOVE big kitchens where all of the family can gather and just hang out" or "big paintings are really my thing".' As if all the rest of us are just like you know what, I don't like big kitchens with super high ceiling and windows towards my swimming pool.
Or how they describe how they like ‘clean spaces’ like yeah Gwyneth everyone likes a clean house we just don’t have a live in housekeeper to maintain it
I really hate clean big spaces where everyone can hang out. So do all of the people in my working class family. That’s why dozens of us would cram together in 20 foot square cluttered spaces. It’s absolutely our jam.
I liked Amanda seyfried's tour a lot. She had reused so many things from previous apartments instead of buying all new all the time. Her kids share a room with bunkbeds. She was really optimising the space. and She was so transparent about it not being her main home, which I really appreciated.
it actually had the opposite effect on me. i found kims house very calming. im not a huge fan of beige minimalist design but her house was very calming like a really expensive spa or something
I agree. Home that looks more traditional (in America, that’s where I live) is more comfortable to me. The whole modern or whatever you call it home thing looks terrifying imo. Like that one Taylor swift clip with all those wall designs.
as someone that grew up with an interior designer mom, the houses that prioritize personality over "good" design are by far my favorite. Going to work with her, I always noticed that rich peoples houses are pretty much carbon copies of eachother and are super boring. Like if I walk into your house I want to get an idea of who you are, not just that you hired an interior designer and told them to "do whatevers trendy"
as a hockey fan the AD tour i love most is connor mcdavids house tour. its soulless and terrifying and reflects the dead gleam he has in his eyes sometimes. but it's also very romantic to me. his girlfriend is an interior designer and designed their house and i just feel like to live in a house that cold and unforgiving in a city that cold and unforgiving (edmonton) is just a tremendous act of love.
I just watched their tour. It’s the most Alberta rich house I’ve ever seen. The exterior looks exactly like all the new houses gentrifying my old neighbourhood but like 2x the size. I hate it so much and yet respect it so utterly
lol I distinctly remember that one because the comments went HARD and because of the micromoment he tried to sponcon and AD cut that shit with the quickness. I also wonder - was his girlfriend really an interior designer or is she one of those people who calls themself that because most of their design experience is their (tasteless) house??
No she didn't, this look is super unflattering. It makes her look old and oddly frames her face. The dark/black eyes with the orange blush is particularly bad.
I felt so so called out while you were describing how nobody would show their apartment, the chair with piles of clothes on top, the makeup stuff all over the vanity... then you revealed you're describing your own space 😂 Girl, youre not alone with this !! ❤
I'm still searching for that 1 celebrity that has floor-to-ceiling bookcases, and hidden rooms behind bookshelves, and all the splendour of a luxurious library, because that's the type of home I want, and I need some real-life inspo lol
I think if I had a big house built, I’d have the designer create secret passages and underground tunnels but NOT tell me the plans, so I can explore. And if I had a lot more money, pay them to change the layout every couple years. And then maybe charge for public tours and let people explore like they were in a mystery movie/show.
Liv Tyler has my favourite house and energy of any AD tour! I love that she showed her attic storage and that she let her children keep their bedrooms private. She also has great taste and such a beautiful home that I would actually want to live in.
My favorite moment was her talking about the magnolia tree in the backyard. It painted such a romantic collection of little moments lived in that house.
My absolute FAVE AD Open House video is Daveed Diggs & Emmy Raver-Lampman's. They have so much character in almost every room of their home and while it isn't as in-your-face and eccentric as some houses featured, it still has personality. Emmy talks about how she partnered with her interior designer to basically make the home an art project for her and I love that. Some of my favourite features are the wallpaper in the downstairs powder room, the kitchen (so glad I'm not the only one who loves a great kitchen), the punch card, and the little decorations throughout the house that mean so much to them such as the ottoman and the framed newspaper in the hallway.
My favorite one of all time is Dita Von Teese. Her house has so much personality, you can tell it's hers even if she isn't there! And it's the one I would most want to live in every day! 😍
Came to the comments to say this. She's the person I would house swap with in a heartbeat. I also like Liv Tyler's, but it's a bit too mellow to be my favourite.
When my family moved houses when I was around 6 years old, I was SO excited for people to come to our open house and see how cool my room was. I remember sitting on my dresser (to show off that I was big enough to get up there) and smiling at people when they came in so I could watch them walk through😂
I loved Karen Gillan's cottage. It was so warm and cozy. Her home felt attainable and relatable. The more opulent the less interesting I find the homes, unless they have a ton of personality. Like when Mariah Carey used to have a whole Hello Kitty bathroom. I can get down with that.
I loved Liv Tyler's for the same reason. She didn't let the cameras in her son's room because he wanted privacy and she had arwyn dolls and swords from lotr in the attic 😂
An interesting perspective is the rise in renter friendly apartment upgrades that are directly the opposite of these home tours. Most Americans live in apartments they don’t own and can’t make changes to. It’s why I have a distaste for celebrity and rich home tours. The parallels of seeing someone make expensive renovations and show off their personal taste which often veers into extravagant style that becomes outdated quickly, is such a contrast to the way the 99% live in white be grey apartments they can’t individualize because they’re afraid they won’t get their security deposit back when they move out. Most people in this generation will never own a home, as opposed to the rich who can spend thousands and millions on yearly upgrades without a worry is sad.
I would actually like to see more people do apartment tours and just showcase what they've done with their space. Even if you can't knock out walls or repaint, there's still a ton you can do to make the space your own. Now that we have things like temporary wallpaper that just peels off, or that pretty vinyl stuff that goes in windows, there's more options to decorate that won't damage the apartment. I rent, and I always go all out personalizing my space.
@@LuthienNightwolfthat would be great! Paige Wassel does videos where she reviews subscribers’ home which are typically just normal person apartments or houses, I really love seeing those. An apartments-only edition would be nice. I need reminders that yes there are others out there upgrading rentals without the use of anime posters or football team blankets over their windows instead of curtains X_X
There's actually a lot you can do in a rental and creative minds will always find a way. I'm glad that the rich can pay incredible artists to make at least some visions come to life. Bc I find it more concerning how little many people do with their homes (grey epidemic etc, I think Mina talked about it in a previous video). So many people in my country are building new homes rn (or they did before the pandemic), but did anything new come out of it? No. They build the basic black and white modern home and you can imagine how these look inside. And there's no excuse bc they have the money to at least buy one weird piece of art or something. But they don't. I've watched many great DIY and makeover channels over the years and I've seen so many great things, for every budget and for renters as well. My problem atm is more the money and yes, renting does limit you. But it's not a good argument why you can't do anything to your home.
I love knowing what's in other people's homes, Im so nosey! Its why I love looking at the trinkets people donate to charity shops (I think Americans call them thrift stores or goodwills???) Because I just love looking at all the weird and wonderful things people used to own
Me too! I'm always curious about how other people have different styles, preferences, and lifestyles than I do. (Also, a side note if you're curious: Goodwill is a large American nonprofit organization that runs thrift stores all across the country. So it's actually a brand name, rather than a generic term like thrift store, charity shop, or op shop.)
I'm in Canada here. We have thrift (for profit) and charity shops (not for profit) as well but they purposely seem to make it a kind of grey area here. I mean most of my apartment is second hand...Actually I think the only thing that isn't is some knick knacks and fairy houses. I was taught not to spend a lot but like my work is so seasonal that I continue to be careful with it. I'm also in college part-time so it's probably good that I am.
Awhile ago I saw Julia Fox give an apartment tour and it was so refreshing! The space just looked normal and it was cluttered because she has a small child. It's the most realistic celebrity home tour I've ever seen.
My favorite is Julia Fox’s home tour with the smoke detector battery noise in the background and was explaining how the mice in her house don’t bother her so she leaves them alone. Not on AD but better.
I’m way too private to ever show off my house. My neighborhood has a homes and gardens tour every single year. I’m always amazed at how many people are willing to open up their home for tours! I would never do that. Even if my house was perfect and gorgeous. I just can’t. I guess I’m weird.
Definitely not weird! I don’t like people coming over to my house, it’s my place of peace and solitude. Plus when I know a guest is coming over, I stress about cleaning/decor/etc
That’s understandable, but my mom did a home tour once at Christmastime (we didn’t have a grand home, it was a log cabin lol) in our small town as part of a charity fundraiser and it was so much fun! We always go SO out at Christmas and it was an honor to invite our community in and share it - this was like 25 years ago? And people still talk about my moms Christmas tree 😂
not weird at all. i love channels like the sorry girls, i love detailed room makeovers, and i would love to have the time and resources to do that - but when i think about how many details of their homes they show, and how, essentially, i know where a complete stranger keeps their socks, it just freaks me out. no amount of free article furniture is worth that for me.
As a loyal fan of The Osbornes I can say that show was a game changer in reality shows. IMO-when Sharon Osborne renegotiated the contract for millions, she set the precedent for future shows like Keeping up with the Kardashian’s.
Regarding searching for celebrity homes: home ownership and sales ARE public record and TECHNICALLY you can find out information that way. HOWEVER: Most wealthy folks have their homes in a trust that isn’t named the same as their name, so it is easier to keep your privacy.
Designing public spaces in your home cause you don't wanna be seen in public is actually so relatable after 2020. My in-laws treat their downstairs like a public space and it used to bug me, but I kinda see how they didn't go mad living in the middle of nowhere and when Covid happened, nothing really changed for them
regarding the authenticity of these homes; i can't believe you didn't mention ashley tisdale stocking her bookshelves with random books just because AD was coming over. while people might've loved dakota johnson's lime's, they didn't really like the bookshelf fiasco, escpecially the people who read a lot
I know it also irked people a lot because it's not just that it's staged, but that the prop stylist gave the books back to the independent bookstore afterwards & basically leeching of the smaller business to "prop up" the celebrity house 😬
I love Rita Ora’s house tour! Her London home has a lot of history to it and she’s clearly tried to retain a lot of the old features rather than gutting it like a lot of people do. I think if I had that much money I would never imagine building a house, when so many beautiful old houses already exist.
My favorite celebrity home tour episode was MTV cribs with rapper Red Man. He just lived in a regular ass 1-story house with a messed up doorbell. You had to rub the 2 wires together to get it to work. He had his "dollar box" on his refrigerator, his cousin was sleeping on the floor, and he had a blue portable Dreamcast console on his nightstand. It was so modest and cozy for a musician who had a good amount of fame and money. I was like "I want a house like Redman when I'm older" lol.
@@mallorycarpinski1160lol, I literally had to rewind to figure out who she was talking about bc I glanced away for a second when she showed the picture. When I saw who it was I was shook, lol.
This is not an AD video, but "Amy Sedaris reveals her magical greenwich village apartment" would be my favorite "celebrity shows their home" video. This woman is gold.
The dystopian feeling of being fully comfortable showing your home you LIVE IN to millions of people is incredibly strong, also ur music stopped at 1:36 idk if its intentional but as a headphone user it sounds a little weird, love u mina❤
I know some of your videos use the echo audio effect btw and maybe it’s a stylistic choice and if so I respect but it’s a little bothersome to the ears :( anyone else? Hehe
But it’s not the house they live in, it’s the house they stage for the video. I guarantee it looks actually lived-in on a non-filming day. Like Miss Dakota and her fake limes 😂
It's true, i makes sense for them to have a show house for the public but i think most of these celebs have multiple houses that frequently get redecorated so it's not too invasive or telling. Im sure as well, they love showing off what their luxurious and privacy is a 2nd thought
there's another video essay about this and some of these houses go for sale after they are showed (30% if im not wrong) so i guess these celebs could be intentionally using AD as a house showing instead of the traditional way or they just decide to do it since they are moving out anyway
i absolutely love ur intro line “hello my beautiful doves” it always makes me feel so welcomed and i luv hearing ur voice in the background while i do my normal daily tasks 😭💖
I was a teen when Cribs was on tv. Loved Cribs and love these recent celeb house tours, even if they are fake. The fake ones are so surreal to watch as these celebs try to explain why their home looks like that. It's like they have never been inside a house before.
My favorite house tour was also Dita von Teese's. It is so unique and "weird" that you know that she is really behind it. I agree that personality is everything for an interesting house tour.
paige wassel has worked on several open door tours! i don't know how much prop stylists are allowed to say, but if you do a longer version of this on the podcast i would love an interview with her!
Lmaoooo @ Dakota Johnson reaction to the absurd staged limes😂😂😂 i bet the people who know her in real life were laughing their asses off at that part of the “home tour”
Yep, even as a little girl I loved interior decorating/design and always tried to sneak a peek inside my neighbors' homes when we were Trick or Treating. I was reading Victoria magazine by age 11 lol.
I also love seeing other people's homes or just seeing different ways homes can be decorated. I like imagining myself living a life in those homes, but since I can't just own 200 homes decorated and laid out in different ways, I settle for watching home tours and building houses in Sims.
Jacqueline Kennedy doing a tour of the White House was so captivating because you know she’s not posing or one of those “Omg I don’t where I get this style from. Silly me.” people.
There's a book called "The Last Lunch" which features her in a chapter, highly suggested read. Her chapter talks a lot about what she was like when she worked in publishing, and how she felt about her presidential fame
09:44 This is precisely why I loved Halloween as a kid. Who cared about the candy--I loved ringing the doorbells of random houses and peeking inside before yelling "trick or treat!" It was really thrilling to ring the doorbell of a house that I thought looked "rich"--who knows if it really was (prob not).
I love Dita Von Teese’s house tour. The kitchen and dining area, plus her outdoor space, were beautiful. But I especially love Kirsten Dunst’s house tour with her designer. I love Kirsten’s interest in vintage/antique stuff and that she loves things that have imperfections. You can tell the designer really understood Kirsten and they collaborated so well, and every piece they talked about had a really meaningful story behind it. I love the AD house tours, and any house/architectural tour),as an escape, but some interiors do inspire my own home decor.
I remember watching Redman's episode of cribs! I thought it was amazing. We had a broken screen door at the time and his same broken screen door made me feel seen! Many years later I actually worked at a real estate company and loved being able to look through listing pictures. I worked weekends a lot, so would talk to new agents who were doing open houses. I have a lot of funny memories, from agents complaining that only nosy neighbours came to vist, to people calling to make appointments to visit an open house, unaware that they didn't need appointments (that's the while point!). I think this kind of content is super addictive at all stages of life. My sister JUST bought a house but still can't stop looking at listings. And I can't blame her.
thanks for always giving context bc every single time i hear someone say "EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT A, B, C, SO I WON'T REPEAT IT HERE," i never know wtf they're talking about. now, here, in like 40 seconds, i'm caught up. thank you lol.
I don't know for sure if it even was an AD feature, but once upon a time a tour of Amy Sedaris' NY apartment started auto-playing on my RUclips, and her style was A LOT, but I love color and coziness, and she had made many of her decor items herself, so I was really impressed with her creativity. It was like being in a storybook dialed up to eleventy - or maybe like the set of one of those highly-curated, heightened reality fantasy tv show/movies I like so much. When I suddenly think about that video I often search it and rewatch it. It's comfort food for me at this point lol.
I'm obsessed with AD open door I am SO glad you made this! Best ones: Karen Gillan, Rita Ora, Dita, Daveed Diggs & Emmy Raver-Lampman, Binging with Babish, Dakota Johnson, Tan France, Liv Tyler, Jensen Ackles. Worst: Anything Kardashian or Dobrik related.
Celebrity homes are actually pretty hard to find because they often buy their homes through a trust or an LLC, and it's usually very generic the name of the LLC or trust. So even if you were to go on your local assessor's database and try and find out who owned the properties, it's not always easy to tell which celebrity owns which property.
Rita Ora’s AD tour is definitely one that massively surprised me and a lot of people who’ve seen it - she has what I believe is a Victorian built home in London that was once the residence of Arthur Rackham, a famous illustrator and what she has done with the space is absolutely stunning. She’s kept so much of the original features and character of the house yet it still feels like a home of the present day and not at all dated or old-timey. She also speaks about the home with so much pride and is so well informed on it’s history - it’s just such a great home and such a great tour 💖
Kirsten Dunst's house is for sure my favorite AD video I've watched so far, she tours by spotlighting specific items, which I thought was pretty unique, and I love her choices. She has so many pieces inspired by media she's been in (like Marie Antoinette), personal interests and favorites, and she's clearly procured her collection over many years, which feels very real. The house seems livable but still interesting, personal. I appreciate her approach.
Hillary Duff‘s house is the only one I’ve seen so far where it feels like people actually live there. You can even see the marks around the rooms her kids made. And she had actual true stories to some of her furniture and you can feel the authenticity:) (I haven’t watched many videos so there are prob more where it feels like that, but yeah I just wanted to name Hillary’s episode:))
another one for me was RDJ and his wife. they have a whole room full of junk and signs printed saying not to let the cats out and there’s actually stuff in their house
i’m so glad you talked ab american vs soviet housing. for one of my courses, i had to do a group project ab postWW2 housing. my specific country was japan, so i covered danchi. however we had to look at political formation, economy, and social demographics. it was interesting to see their housing was borrowed from the ussr while us occupation affected their economic/political functions. architecture is so important to societies.
I think it’s funny how Michael Imperioli and Kim Kardashian’s homes are complete opposites but they both said the same thing about wanting to create a peaceful place where they can forget about the outside world but for Kim is an empty greige home and for Michael a packed italian palace like place with gold and bright colors everywhere 😌
Bruh the light meter gave me so much info about how little my plants were getting!! And!! I used it to convince my boss plants would grow at work so now we’re getting plants!
Omg Greta garbo! My brother got married in her Amalfi coast villa in Ravello over the summer (which is now a hotel). Then my family stayed in her Sicilian villa in Letojanni (which is on Airbnb!). Her homes were beautiful, she had impeccable taste. The most stunning properties I’ve ever seen on the Mediterranean! Legend has it that she only visited the Sicilian villa in the winter to avoid fans and tourists. She was super private.
I'm not huge on celebrity house tours (mostly because there's not a lot of celebrities I'm interested in), though I can certainly see the appeal. HOWEVER, I absolutely eat up content about artists' studios. I love when the artists I follow share pictures of their studios so much. Mark Ryden, Mab Graves, and Seth all come to mind
One of my favorite AD house tours is Liv Tyler's. I loved her house and listening to her talk about it was both enjoyable and confusing somehow. lol And I really liked when Ashley Tisdale admitted her husband just bought the books in a bookcase in hers.
You were so right about the commercialisation of the home! I recently revamped by fridge after seeing so many tiktoks and now im realising my fridge looks like a store, stocked neatly in boxes.
A lot of celebrities who feature their houses on AD are actually looking to sell it. Liv Tyler is a great example of this. She had been trying to sell her brownstone for years but was able to get buyers after featuring it on AD.
Shoutout to the editor(?)/ whoever chose and did the font parts of the video. They were really nice. Liked the color scheme, font chosen and just the way it flowed in the video.
i LOVE daveed diggs and emmy raver-lampman’s home. i love how much, in the video, they describe where they found the inspo for the art, what were their quarantine projects, what was thrifted… if i had a space that big, id love do something with that much personality
troye sivan's is one of my favorites! love vanessa hudgens's mostly for that amazing backyard/garden. amanda seyfried's was great, too, very realistic NYC square footage but still beautiful and charming
amanda seyfried's apartment was so cool - it's not super interesting, but my tastes are also not super interesting, if someone has pretty mcm stuff i'm there
My favourite ones from AD were Liv Tyler and Karen Gillan's houses. Liv's house wasn't actually new , she bought it years ago in her 20s and actually curated everything that was in the house in time, she didn't just choose to depend on an interior designer for everything. And I loved that her boys rooms weren't shown because of privacy and had stickers on their doors. Karen's house is basically my dream house and it also felt really genuine and practical too.
I like them because I'm nosy about how other people decorate their home. But most of them just remind me of that 1 Insta account that does 'sad beige toys for sad beige children' you know? All the money in the world, yet all they have is beige, it's either natural beige, industrial beige, woodsy beige, desert beige. I guess celebrities realise they've made it when beige becomes their favourite colour! 😅
The editing! ❤ Wendy Williams crying over the rug in David Harbour and Lily Allen's bathroom and the clip of her running out of a room was hilarious! 😂
Cara Delevingne’s is one of my favs forever! I like how she has a lot of different areas in her house, but they work together so beautifully, and anyone can find the most comfortable spot for them there. I feel like such home can be both perfect for a huge party for loads of very unalike people, but also is just as ideal for living all by yourself I also enjoyed a lot of the colors, plant themes and details all over the place
Her home wasn’t featured in any publications (I believe) but I liked Julia Fox’s apartment tour on TikTok. It was a lot more authentic than what is usually presented in celebrity homes.
I thought Dita von Teese was the coolest, but then my friend showed me Anna Sui’s home. Love both though. Their homes made me want to embrace the repressed feelings in making my current living space into a home. As a kid, I only lived in low income apartments with no space of my own. Just furniture, clothes and toys. My mom was a big advocate of minimalism to nothing in the apts we’d move to. So I grew up wanting to become an interior designer to ultimately realize I just wanted to feel at home somewhere for once. Now that I have my own place, I go ham with my decorating and have alllll the books I want in/on shelves. It makes me feel comfortable, safe, inspired, and good about being at home. Plus I finally get to make it smell like flowers 😭✨
The part at the end of the video where you just talk about your vintage finds and enthuse about your outfit made me want a long-ass video of you going through your favourite pieces in your closet and telling the story of how you acquired them, how you like to style them, etc.!! Your essays are always so well-researched and well-presented, and I think a wardrobe tour would be just as enlightening coming from you!!
Chloe Fineman’s tour was amazing! She out a lot of thought and effort into her design but also just had her stuff shoved to the side in the kitchen. It was crafted but not a show off of opulence. Like, a normal person with a kinda normal apartment who designed it well.
I'm so glad you mentioned MTV Cribs! When I first saw an AD home tour video all I could think about was Cribs. Which kinda helped with not getting sucked into watching the AD videos because I've "been there done that" with Cribs when I was in middle school. Which is also how I feel about the Bachelor and Bachelorette since as a kid and teenager I watched a lot of the VH1 dating shows like A Shot of Love, Flavor of Love, and I love New York.
I think my favorite celebrity house tour is Amy Sedadis’ apartment tour from Interior Lives. The narration, music, and house itself is all so charming and eccentric!
i just realized... this is video #100!!!
Congrats Mina!!!
Yay! 🎉
Congrats girl!!🎉
congrats mina !! 🎉🎉
Cool.
It makes me giggle every time lol. It’s on everyone, everyyonee
yes omg lmao. You'll always find at least one and a version of them are also always under those vogue makeup get ready with me's.
Fr! As if the celeb probably didn’t have a team show up to make sure everything was perfect before the interview.
“Normal” people will often spruce up their house/clean before guests are coming over, I can only imagine the pre-interview sprucing celebs do.
It’s like an npc is behind those comments.
“I love limes and I like to present them like this in my house” always kills me
To me, it doesn't sound like she was trying to lie. Her tone sounds very sarcastic/ironic, specifically because she was surprised to see that big bowl of a fruit she is allergic to prominently displayed in her house while a camera crew was filming her.
@@vbrown6445 completely agree. It cracks me up.

Incidentally these celebrity homes are often listed on Zillow straight after their AD video airs. They only show their home once they are no longer using it. They are using the AD video as a free real estate advert that they also get paid for. Cashing in twice.

That’s your class consciousness being raised
It probably allows you to channel genuine fury about injustices in your life or that you've witnessed that you feel powerless to tackle into something trivial and therefore manageable. Be careful with your annoyance, anger is your most precious resource when it comes to changing things you need to change. Dilute it too much and it becomes ineffective.
For me it's a mix of being angry at the vanity and also fascinated by the beauty
Mariah Carey’s episode of cribs lives rent free in my mind. Her massive closet, the bathtub scene, the way she changed outfits each time she entered a new room. Top tier glamour✨
Didn't she say that she owns marilyn monroes piano?
Awww man. Her house is a dream. I wouldn’t want a mansion but having a huge closet and huge bathtub would be pretty awesome.
nobody does it like MC
Wiz Khalifa's is my favorite. Not necessarily architecturally, but just because he has his kid's toys everywhere and doesn't care about the place looking perfect at every angle. People never seem to think about children when they design a house, which I think is a shame because you can have so much fun with it. The house actually felt like people used it instead of a museum.
Edit: design-wise I liked Kirsten Dunst, Aaron Paul, and Emma Chamberlain's homes
the staging is what makes these tours usually feel dystopic. making the houses overly sterile takes away all the humanity.
Right?

I worship her, her house is everything!! if I ever own a house it would be very similar but with a darker/warmer colour palette
Cleaning her house must be every cleaners/housemaids nightmare
i have watched that video every other month for years because it’s so comforting
Oh wow! Now that you say it - I‘ve seen it too!
Omg I’ve rewatched that video countless times! I love her style

I met Simone de Beauvoir in her Parisian flat in 1985 for about 5 minutes to get an autograph in one of my twin sister’s and my favourite books. I tried to soak up as much as possible, it is one of my most precious memories in my 60 year old life.
Wow!
Those AD videos always make me super uncomfortable, I still watch them because architecture, but they just seem so curated and uncanny valley vibes. Like its pretending to be a home but feels off.
I prefer Listed and Apartment Therapy for more normal homes
to me, that makes it a bit less uncomfortable :) i get weirded out by the thought of random strangers _actually_ knowing how someone lives, and the fact that AD tours are so curated and fake gives me a distance that makes it better.
Yeah, I enjoy their architecture focused videos way more but I guess the celeb home videos help with getting more views/revenue
I love the random stories they feel they need to tell about a light fixture they fell in love with or a picture on the wall, I genuinely can’t tell if they just make it all up to mess with people 😂
@@drunk_on_milkshakes3279 yes that was dakota Johnson and i liked her house whether it's real or not lol
County Appraisal district websites lol :) yup very insightful
Always found it funny how ultra rich celebrities describe luxurious attributes of their homes as linked to their own personal taste.
"I really LOVE big kitchens where all of the family can gather and just hang out" or "big paintings are really my thing".'
As if all the rest of us are just like you know what, I don't like big kitchens with super high ceiling and windows towards my swimming pool.
"Here's the chair covered in my laundry" caught me, Mina...
Or how they describe how they like ‘clean spaces’ like yeah Gwyneth everyone likes a clean house we just don’t have a live in housekeeper to maintain it
@@abbymyers5072 exactlyyyy
I really hate clean big spaces where everyone can hang out. So do all of the people in my working class family. That’s why dozens of us would cram together in 20 foot square cluttered spaces. It’s absolutely our jam.
I liked Amanda seyfried's tour a lot. She had reused so many things from previous apartments instead of buying all new all the time. Her kids share a room with bunkbeds. She was really optimising the space. and She was so transparent about it not being her main home, which I really appreciated.
I really like her house too, especially her kids room, it is so so cute!!
The Kim Kardashian house would give me anxiety with all that white and bright light everywhere. Dita Von Teese's house was my all time favorite.
same, seeing kim's home is absolutely anxiety inducing for me. i need colors and most importantly WARMTH!!
Loveddddd dita von teeses house
it actually had the opposite effect on me. i found kims house very calming. im not a huge fan of beige minimalist design but her house was very calming like a really expensive spa or something
I agree. Home that looks more traditional (in America, that’s where I live) is more comfortable to me. The whole modern or whatever you call it home thing looks terrifying imo. Like that one Taylor swift clip with all those wall designs.
Her house looks like it would be freezing cold 😂😮
as someone that grew up with an interior designer mom, the houses that prioritize personality over "good" design are by far my favorite. Going to work with her, I always noticed that rich peoples houses are pretty much carbon copies of eachother and are super boring. Like if I walk into your house I want to get an idea of who you are, not just that you hired an interior designer and told them to "do whatevers trendy"
Thhhiiiiiiiissssssssssss!!!!
as a hockey fan the AD tour i love most is connor mcdavids house tour. its soulless and terrifying and reflects the dead gleam he has in his eyes sometimes. but it's also very romantic to me. his girlfriend is an interior designer and designed their house and i just feel like to live in a house that cold and unforgiving in a city that cold and unforgiving (edmonton) is just a tremendous act of love.
I have no idea who that is but this comment was so funny, thank you
Wow true it's hard to live in a bland Edmonton house. I need to watch

I think if I had a big house built, I’d have the designer create secret passages and underground tunnels but NOT tell me the plans, so I can explore. And if I had a lot more money, pay them to change the layout every couple years. And then maybe charge for public tours and let people explore like they were in a mystery movie/show.
I like the way you think.
That's such a cool idea!!

Liv Tyler has my favourite house and energy of any AD tour! I love that she showed her attic storage and that she let her children keep their bedrooms private. She also has great taste and such a beautiful home that I would actually want to live in.

Gotta watch this one now! I love Liv Tyler anyway❤3
My favorite moment was her talking about the magnolia tree in the backyard. It painted such a romantic collection of little moments lived in that house.
And her voice is so soothing too, love this tour
I love, love, love their house - and that kitchen!!!!!
My favorite one of all time is Dita Von Teese. Her house has so much personality, you can tell it's hers even if she isn't there! And it's the one I would most want to live in every day! 😍
I saw it too, multiple times
Same, because her house tells you that she has a very wide range of interests.
Came to the comments to say this. She's the person I would house swap with in a heartbeat. I also like Liv Tyler's, but it's a bit too mellow to be my favourite.
When my family moved houses when I was around 6 years old, I was SO excited for people to come to our open house and see how cool my room was. I remember sitting on my dresser (to show off that I was big enough to get up there) and smiling at people when they came in so I could watch them walk through😂
Lol this made me crack up what a sweet story

I'll have to look her up, I geek out at that kind of stuff. lol @@Justaregularoldplumbus
Same
It is always fascinating to visit a new house
I gravitate towards thrift because a lot of modern stuff is so cookie cutter and common
My wish is for Mina to get the dream home she deserves and get a house tour of that. You just know how beautiful and unique it would look.
Awhile ago I saw Julia Fox give an apartment tour and it was so refreshing! The space just looked normal and it was cluttered because she has a small child. It's the most realistic celebrity home tour I've ever seen.
Weirdly i felt like her 'down to earth' girl felt at little forced. Maybe i am wrong to think that.
I don’t think that’s weird, our home is a place of refuge and you shouldn’t feel the need to have it on display.
Also I guess I'm just paranoid that someone would take notes on how to break in or something
not weird at all. i love channels like the sorry girls, i love detailed room makeovers, and i would love to have the time and resources to do that - but when i think about how many details of their homes they show, and how, essentially, i know where a complete stranger keeps their socks, it just freaks me out. no amount of free article furniture is worth that for me.
Haunted
I loved Rita’s as well!
Reminding me of Cardi B doing 73 Questions in her grandmother's project apartment in the Bronx.
The way she pronounced his name like a last name not Red MAN
@@mallorycarpinski1160lol, I literally had to rewind to figure out who she was talking about bc I glanced away for a second when she showed the picture.
Im sure as well, they love showing off what their luxurious and privacy is a 2nd thought
there's another video essay about this and some of these houses go for sale after they are showed (30% if im not wrong) so i guess these celebs could be intentionally using AD as a house showing instead of the traditional way or they just decide to do it since they are moving out anyway
when I was a teen, I used to tell people how I would've furbished their houses, until I realized how rude that actually was lol
i absolutely love ur intro line “hello my beautiful doves” it always makes me feel so welcomed and i luv hearing ur voice in the background while i do my normal daily tasks 😭💖
I’m so glad you mentioned Grey Gardens. I watched that with my mom when it randomly came on cable as a kid and i’ve been wanting to rewatch it lately.

Yep, even as a little girl I loved interior decorating/design and always tried to sneak a peek inside my neighbors' homes when we were Trick or Treating. I was reading Victoria magazine by age 11 lol.
Oh, Victoria magazine! I loved that. I haven’t thought of it in ages. I was fascinated by that and Martha Stewart from a young age too.
I also love seeing other people's homes or just seeing different ways homes can be decorated. I like imagining myself living a life in those homes, but since I can't just own 200 homes decorated and laid out in different ways, I settle for watching home tours and building houses in Sims.
The moment you started talking about the history I screamed “MTV CRIBS” that was def my first exposure to this type of content LOL
Jacqueline Kennedy doing a tour of the White House was so captivating because you know she’s not posing or one of those “Omg I don’t where I get this style from. Silly me.” people.
Her style was innate and educated at once.
I love reading historical accounts of her. Super classy lady.
There's a book called "The Last Lunch" which features her in a chapter, highly suggested read. Her chapter talks a lot about what she was like when she worked in publishing, and how she felt about her presidential fame
Bff. She was the FIRST LADY giving a tour of the WHITE HOUSE. Every blink she did was preplanned.
She is actually giving a tour of the place, as a lady of the old day would do for the important guests.
Your research and dedication truly shows. Thanks for this! I have a whole new rabbit hole of tracking down these documentaries.

Her outfits are getting better and more flamboyant each video I LIVE for it
One of my comfort videos is Sienna Miller's house tour, it's just so cozy and feels authentic, I love it
I don't know for sure if it even was an AD feature, but once upon a time a tour of Amy Sedaris' NY apartment started auto-playing on my RUclips, and her style was A LOT, but I love color and coziness, and she had made many of her decor items herself, so I was really impressed with her creativity. It was like being in a storybook dialed up to eleventy - or maybe like the set of one of those highly-curated, heightened reality fantasy tv show/movies I like so much. When I suddenly think about that video I often search it and rewatch it. It's comfort food for me at this point lol.
I love how well researched each of your videos are. I never knew about Jackie O’s tour of the White House.
smoking in the bathroom was the favorite pastime at my hs which makes adult celebrities doing it even funnier
I'm obsessed with AD open door I am SO glad you made this!
Best ones: Karen Gillan, Rita Ora, Dita, Daveed Diggs & Emmy Raver-Lampman, Binging with Babish, Dakota Johnson, Tan France, Liv Tyler, Jensen Ackles.
Worst: Anything Kardashian or Dobrik related.
David Harbour's was also really nice. And his house was the inspiration for Babish's
Jensen Ackles’ house tour was my favourite. It had a super cozy and relaxing vibe. The house has so much personality.
I appreciate her approach.
florence welch’s house tour is my all time favorite, its so beautiful and if fairies existed they would definitely live in her garden
Hillary Duff‘s house is the only one I’ve seen so far where it feels like people actually live there. You can even see the marks around the rooms her kids made. And she had actual true stories to some of her furniture and you can feel the authenticity:)
(I haven’t watched many videos so there are prob more where it feels like that, but yeah I just wanted to name Hillary’s episode:))
another one for me was RDJ and his wife. they have a whole room full of junk and signs printed saying not to let the cats out and there’s actually stuff in their house
i’m so glad you talked ab american vs soviet housing. for one of my courses, i had to do a group project ab postWW2 housing. my specific country was japan, so i covered danchi. however we had to look at political formation, economy, and social demographics. it was interesting to see their housing was borrowed from the ussr while us occupation affected their economic/political functions. architecture is so important to societies.
Red man’s episode was ICONIC!!! I still occasionally rewatch that episode on RUclips 😂😂😂
I need Mina to do an outfit showcase, these outfits she wears are always fantastic 20's flair.
Home videos are my comfort tv and your videos are like a safe space of aesthetics and cultural deep dives, SO this was a match made in heaven
So does anyone remember when MTV Cribs was a thing? This is what this video is making me think of. And now Architectural Digest is doing it.
Yes! I remember Marilyn Manson did one, and he said,'I'm Marilyn Manson, and this is my Marilyn Mansion' or something like that 😂
She talks about them being a catalyst around the 14 min mark
And every celeb said when they showed the master bedroom: "and this is where the magic happens!!" 😂
Thank you, I knew I couldn’t be the only one
@@marjoleinsmolders1630 lol it was like this through line that indicated the celebs had watched the show
I am absolutely in love with Mina wearing orange. It's her color, her shade. Orange does NOT wear her like it does on so many, she owns it. 🧡🧡🧡
Cara Delevingne’s is one of my favs forever! I like how she has a lot of different areas in her house, but they work together so beautifully, and anyone can find the most comfortable spot for them there. I feel like such home can be both perfect for a huge party for loads of very unalike people, but also is just as ideal for living all by yourself
I also enjoyed a lot of the colors, plant themes and details all over the place
‘Uhh I love a courtyard’ yessss
Her home wasn’t featured in any publications (I believe) but I liked Julia Fox’s apartment tour on TikTok. It was a lot more authentic than what is usually presented in celebrity homes.
First reaction to the outfit: Omg SHUT UP with this look 🥹🥹💜 perfection
Yes. And the bunny!
yes!
I remember that Redman cribs like it was yesterday. 😂 one of the best ones ever
I wish Matthew Gray Gubler had an AD House Tour because his Vanity Fair video interviewing him in his home is so chaotic.
