ill start this off by throwing ayanokouji into the ring, i refuse to believe his character isnt satire. the only reason im going to finish this series is out of pure determination not to leave a show half-finished
Hajime Nagumo (cringe edgelord with bad 3D)
Eiji Hoshimiya (Yuuki is better both coming from Sakae Enoue)
Kazuya Kinoshita (360+ chapters told enough about him)
Just title it "What is the most insufferable MC from an anime that is not an isekai" otherwise I'll tell you every MC from every LN based isekai shat out by the industry each season.
A distant second is Dark Gathering... Keitaro was one of the worst. A pathetic crybaby who bawls at every jumpscare for no reason despite being surrounded by evidence that paranormal stuff exists; meanwhile the chicks stand around with SMUG SMIRKS wiped across their faces, and are like "Hahaha we're Brave Girl Bosses in an anime" while they tow him around smirking, and he cries and freaks out like a dam 2 year old
...and the girl with the skulls for eye pupils is also insufferable, because having skulls for pupils is just annoying and stupid.
Jesus Yamato from gundam seed, the story tricks you to think he'll have an interesting internal conflict until Lacus ex machina sent the freedom to resolve any moral question in the story
Sung Jin Woo is basically a self insert fantasy where a good for nothing loser gets super strong and hot in a short period of time, beats up all the enemies, and gets the girl. No development or actual writing at all.
If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece
I'll go with Rudeus. It just makes me sick how he's a complete scumbag, yet everything works out in his favor just so the series can sell you on his "redemption"

Noooo, not my boy Asta. I swear he is only really annoying for like 40 episodes (LOL).
There are a few that come to mind for myself, but my hatred towards Tokyo Revengers prevails. Whatever his name was, I barely got through watching the show because of how unlikable the cast was.

@Horizon248 40 eps was about all I could make it through LOL. And Asta's just who immediately came to mind. I am sure if I put an iota of thought to it, I could come up with worse.
Without a doubt, it's Haruhi, the most despicable character I've ever seen, not just in anime.
You bitch!
@Jonas-K And speaking of despicable FMCs, I can think of one that is worse than Asta, or Haruhi. Tohru from the original Fruits Basket was totally insufferable.

@joemaamah For sure, I could probably do the same but I easily forget the characters I dislike.
I can't blame you for not wanting to watch more Black Clover. It does have a long runway before you get to the actual good content. I watched it during the pandemic, so I basically had nothing better to do lol. That being said though, I did end up enjoying it.

@Jonas-K she is a God have you ever seen God acting in good faith? No because God are tyrannical it's the whole premise of haruhi a tyrannical god and his whim.
Subaru from My Roommate is a Cat. You'd think an anime featuring a cat would be an insta 10/10, but this bloke was so inept at life that I actually had to drop the show. Absolutely disgusting character.
Shibuya Yuuri from Kyo Kara Maoh - he knows nothing about the country or about politics or about ruling a nation but he's still made the king. He's just a self-insert for fujos, just a girl with a dick attached. He discriminates people based on looks what a great quality to have for a king! And he simps to his abuser and the guy who tried to rape him.
Always the same… Every age, every generation.
Human beings are infinitely more cruel and selfish than any demon in hell ~Dantalion (Makai Ouji)
I have to agree with you on Ayanokoji. What makes him so much worse is that he's more of a contradiction to the plot rather than a connection. His philosophies and ideals, while very enticing on paper, aren't really properly established to show what the series wants to do with the character and are more of glorified display pieces just to excuse the premise. Also, he's a massive Gary-Stu. I don't mind characters that succeed in most things. It's actually not half-bad writing in itself. But the biggest problem is that his obstacles are complicated, and those consist of studying knowledge, overcoming his communication problems, and so on. Yet, despite how long this series can be, he just finishes them without any bit of indication whatsoever. So unless there are some additional shorts of his focus which I highly doubt would make up for the series' fundamental issues, let alone exist, he just has zero flaws to himself on top of being annoyingly poorly written. One would argue about his intelligence and I guess that's understandable. He's one of, if not, the smartest characters in any industry. But that doesn't mean it's written well; I'd argue that even the intelligence part became a one-trick pony. And no, the light novel does not fix anything. His entire character (as well as his entire series) is more or less the same. There's more stuff around, sure, but again, those aren't established properly.
With that being said, he's not even the most insufferable protag for me because that title goes to Hoshino Aquamarine from Oshi no Ko. I'm sure some veteran readers would understand why I'm entirely dissing him. But those who don't know the AGONY of this empty husk, let's go through some things step-by-step. The whole point of Aqua is that he's a very complicated anti-hero who is a detective and seeks revenge with his twin sister. I always love the idea of morally grey characters having a complicated history and I think the concept behind Aqua could prove that. What makes Aqua a massive letdown as an actual character, however, is that he's not even complicated. He's just stupid. The thing about Aqua is that he shows literally zero expression regarding his characterization and development (if you wanna call them that in front of him). He has his ideals but they're only used as info dumps and for the most part, he's just an edgelord with zero personality on top of being annoying. What makes this so much worse, though, is how incomprehensibly useless he his. He's a complete dumbass who doesn't really do anything in and to the plot at all despite being a detective. He only exists because the series needed some detectives. I like the detective stereotype, but you have to at least do something with Aqua. Unfortunately, though, he virtually doesn't fight against any consequence because of his random incompetence and even if he does, by the time he lifted a stick, his showcasing is probably over by that moment.
Oh yeah, to those who read the manga, I also want to say that his death is absurdly meaningless. He's so stupid that he's willing to face a murderer on his own. Not only is he very incompetent as mentioned earlier, but for 150+ chapters, we still don't see any meaningful chemistry with any character, even with Ruby, and he doesn't really get any progression. So yeah, he fights with no awareness whatsoever and he dies like a wimpy twig.
