Well, that was cute I guess.

Too many kisses and felt way too sudden though, not that I didn't expect it.

It was an okay oneshot, pretty rushed but understandable seeing it was only a little less than 20 pages.

I always laugh, and got annoyed at the same time when someone pull out the "because it's my first.." card.

Like the others have said, it was so short that it felt pointless.

...
The kisses were a bit bothersome, since they were so sudden.

John's Random One-Shot Reviews #3 (08/08/24)

Summary:

Random guy kisses random girl while she's asleep in a schoolyard. He doesn't justify it until spontatneously inviting her to karaoke and she tries to leave. He then explains: she looks like his ex. Then he kisses her again. Riveting.

Review:

The following probably wouldn’t be considered spoiler given that the following discusses the first pages of the manga and is presumably the selling point, so…

A schoolgirl (Mizuki) is asleep in the schoolyard. She awakens to a classmate she has never interacted with before (Takumi) kissing her. She is flustered and calls him a “player” but surprisingly is never at any point angered. Huh… I wonder how someone in 2024 would react to this story. Lol. For context, looks like it was published in 2013.

Side note: these two have presumably never met or interacted before, yet Takumi immediately refers to Mizuki by her name during their first conversation. That had me scratching my head.

Not to sound like an offended westerner—I understand how romance shojo logic works—I just simply fail to get invested in something so outlandish. The question I’m asking myself throughout the read is—at the end of Scene 2 out of 4, which presumably only takes place 1 hour after getting her first kiss stolen—how does she already reciprocate this guy’s love? Again, I understand how romance shojo logic works. Kind of. I just don’t think this is enough of a reason to waive score deductions per poor pacing.

Pacing-wise… there are only four scenes in this already short story.- Scene 1: Random kiss- Scene 2: Karaoke- Scene 3: 3-month time skip to the future. Spoiler alert: the two are friends.- Scene 4: 1-day later. A rushed and spontaneous grand climax where the boy expresses his true feelings.

The span of scenes 1-2 have to be like just around an hour in-universe. Lots of kissing. If only life was actually that theatrical eh. I won’t spoil the reason this guy’s actually infatuated with this girl, but regarding his reasoning: not only does it NOT justify him suddenly kissing some random girl, but his reasoning is arguably/distastefully impulsive and very surface-level (not deep or interesting). When Mizuki gleans Takumi’s reasoning for choosing her, she somehow forgets the absurdity of her situation and enters full sympathy mode.

The story tries to frame Takumi as a troubled young lad who NEEDS Mizuki (for the most trivial reason). I’ll say that the story ends happily ever after for both characters; something I feel I can “spoil” for a breakneck-speed one-shot like this. However, the conclusion does not feel earned or justifiable or fleshed out.

I feel awful rating almost any manga low, regardless of the subject matter, because of how excruciating the artistic process is in the mangaka industry. The art, like any other manga, is competently drawn, immersive, and appealing to look at. But when the plot material stoops below any remarkability, and when I start to physically wince at the character interactions I witness, I simply cannot spare the story an unflattering score.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
